ARTIST STATEMENT

Hello! My name is Trevor and I'm a composer, improviser, performer, writer, over-thinker, and tinkerer. Some of my current obsessions include improvisation, human-computer interaction, and microtonality. I make a living by playing piano for ballet classes, blues bands, and fusion projects, but I also like to attempt trumpet, electric bass, and drums. I also teach a small studio of 10 or so students in classical and jazz piano. Sometimes I write words too.

People whose art I admire include Makaya McCraven, Thelonious Monk, David Lynch, Herbie Hancock, Nick Drake, Rory Ferreira (Milo, Scallops Hotel), Zach Hill (Hella, Death Grips), Georg Friedrich Haas, František Kupka, Witold Lutosławski, Esperanza Spalding, Omar Rodríguez-López (At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta), Rush, Gustav Mahler, and Miles Davis.

I've had the pleasure of working with Inversion Ensemble, The Austin Symphony Orchestra, The Eastside Blues Syndicate, The Boulder Chorale, Colorado Honor Band Association, and the McCallum Fine Arts Academy Orchestra among many other lovely collaborators.

I've studied composition with Michael Theodore, Adam Gorb, Laura Bowler, John Drumheller, Carter Pann, Daniel Kellogg, Yevgeniy Sharlat, and Jerry Grant, piano with Alejandro Cremaschi, Toku Kawata, and Matt McLaughlin, and trumpet with Alan Rogers and Glenn Smith. I have a BM degree in composition from CU Boulder, where I spent four lovely years.

In my free time I love to walk around outside, write bad poetry, and try to learn things about math, science, and philosophy with varying degrees of success.

SHORT BIO

Trevor Villwock (b. 1995) is a composer and pianist currently based in Austin, TX. His music centers primarily around the act of artistic exploration, and draws inspiration from the work of Georg Friedrich Haas, Zach Hill, Witold Lutosławski, Omar Rodríguez-López, and Thelonious Monk, among others. Trevor’s works have received premieres from the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Inversion Ensemble, Boulder Chorale, and the Colorado Honor Band Association, and range from electroacoustic pieces for a single performer to operatic stage works and pieces for large orchestra. His principal composition teachers have included Michael Theodore, Yevgeniy Sharlat, Daniel Kellogg, Carter Pann, and John Drumheller. He holds a BM Composition degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
